Sports fans given chance to see Olympic hockey stars 12 months early
British sports fans will have the chance to see top class international hockey live in London a full year before the Olympic Games arrive in the capital as the city gets set to host a new international tournament, the London Cup.
Hosts England, the European Champions, will welcome Commonwealth Games bronze medalists New Zealand, Korea and Belgium to the University of Westminster’s Quintin Hogg Memorial Sports Ground in Chiswick, West London, from 12-16 July 2011.
Launching the London Cup, Jonathan Cockcroft EHB Commercial & Membership Director said: ‘Bringing international hockey to London gives both hockey and sports fans the opportunity to marvel at the pace and power of our future Olympians in the flesh only a year out from London 2012.
England captain Barry Middleton said: ‘The team is getting increasingly excited about this opportunity to play in London especially with the London 2012 Olympics only a year away. We’re really hoping that hockey and sports fans come and support us at this inaugural London Cup event.’
In addition to eight incredible hockey matches, the London Cup will provide visitors with the chance to try their hand at hockey; check out the latest hockey equipment in the tented village and show off to friends as they attempt to beat ‘The Stick’, hockey’s very own tame goalkeeper.
There are a variety of hospitality packages available too.
Tuesday 12 July
is Ladies Night when the England Hockey Board partners with selected brands to present guests with a chance to sample some fine products, attend a presentation by the England Hockey women’s team and take home a goody bag…as well as watching two great matches on a balmy July evening.
The London Cup will be an annual event which will form a key part of the Great Britain and England Hockey squads’ calendar in the future. Playing these international matches at home present the public with a great chance to show their support of their team and their country.’
