Day 3 – Balkan Caravan

Posted On 29th May 2014

After a 3 hour journey we arrived in Plovdiv on Tuesday night. We were shown round the historic city after dinner, before heading back to the hotel to rest for the following day.
Our morning session was split into a younger beginner group and an older, more advanced, group. We worked on 1v1 elimination skills with the younger group and 3D elimination skills with the older group. Finishing with a 6-a-side tournament.
The afternoon saw us teach the kids close in goal scoring techniques and small unit principles much assisted by a student from the local university, Kristin, who translated for the coaching team. We concluded the session with our traditional group ‘we love Hockey’ chant.
The coaching teams attempts to speak Bulgarian continues to draw laughter from the children. Not least our constant use of the word ball (Chopka or was it Topka?). They got the point, we hope!
Throughout the day we met, and were made to feel very welcome by Eli (Bulgarian Hockey Federation Ethics Chairperson), Rosita (Plovdiv club coach), Kristin (student translator) and Lgubo (Petar Baron club coach).
After a quick shower we then set off on our journey up the Rhodepe mountains for day 4 with new driver, Peter Kadovski (Bulgarian senior international), to Rudozem…..
The journey continues….
