Day 4 at the EuroHockey Youth Championships, Girls U16

Posted On 13th July 2014

Our fourth day commenced with fears of a delayed start as the skies blackened and there was a spectacular storm.  In the end this this only proved the spark that Italy needed to get their match against Poland off to a great start with a goal scored within the first two minutes of the opening whistle.  A second goal after 18 minutes delighted the raucous home crowd who despite the heavy rain turned out in force to support their girls.  Poland did pull a goal back midway in the first half but the second half saw Italy pull away eventually tot cruise to a convincing 4 – 1 victory which saw them move up to third in the table.
Thoughts of an upset in the second match with Austria pegging back the impressive Russian side were short lived as another wet and stormy match saw the Russians prove their dominance of this Championship.  Despite a brave effort by the Austrian girls the Russians were just too strong for them.  Once again the Russian captain showed her team how to score goals with four more to her name making a total of nine from her four matches.   A consoling cheer from the crowd greeted the Austrian goal, a fine effort from Daniela Streb but neither this or the wet Italian summer could dampen the Russian celebrations as they ended the game with their second 10 goal tally with joyful celebrations knowing that they could enjoy their rest day and lift the European Championship trophy at the end of it.
Even though the Champions are know there is still lots to play for on the last day of the tournament with Czech Republic, Austria and hosts Italy all knowing that they could still end second in the table.  This could yet all come down to the final match of what has been an exciting and enjoyable event for all.
