Russia are the EuroHockey Champions U16 Girls…

13th July 2014

As predicted, final pool standings came right down to today’s final match. In the first contest of the day, Poland worked hard to get their first points of the competition and in so doing prevent the Czech Republic from keeping their second place in the table going into the last match. In a free flowing game Poland defended well and always looked dangerous on the counter attack and despite their goal keeper saving two penalty strokes to keep them in the points, it was eventually a 69th minute goal by Czech number 8, Veronika Koprivova, that broke Polish hearts and gave the Czech  team the three points they wanted.
With everything to play for and a 6 goal difference deficit to overturn if Italy were to wrest second place from Czech Republic and the incentive of a top three finish for Austria in their first u16 Girls Championship the first half was a tense, exciting affair with both sides trading near misses and the goalkeepers playing to their best, but it was Italy who took an early initiative and went into half time
1 – 0 up. In the hot, Bolognese sunshine the second half carried on apace until a superb solo effort from Austrian captain Daria Buchta who carried the ball into the circle and fired her shot past the outstretched leg of the goal keeper to put Austria back in contention. Italy almost struck back immediately but Austria consolidated their lead four minutes later and held on to win 2-1 and grab
that third spot.
