Ukraine, Ireland and Italy fighting for promotion at the EuroHockey Junior Championship II in Vienna

Posted On 18th July 2014

The  group-stages of the EuroHockey Junior Championship II for women in Vienna is over – and it gave us  some  thrilling games! Only Ukraine managed to top their pool alone, while Italy and Ireland won their groups only on goal-difference, beating Belarus and Scotland in the race for one of the medal-spots.
Ukraine won Group B by beating Turkey and Belarus by 3:0 each and is the only team that did not concede a single goal in the group-stage. Belarus managed to take second place by beating Turkey 8:3 with a strong second half, after 2:2 at halftime.

Ireland took the top-spot in Group C, by goal difference over Scotland. The decisive game between these two was the best match of the tournament so far, ending in an exciting 3:3. Scotland secured the second place with a convincing 6:0 against Lithuania in their opener on Monday.
Hosts Austria finished only third in Group A, showing two good games against Poland and Italy, but losing both. In their opener against Poland the Austrian girls were beaten by 1:2, in their second game they lost to Italy by 2:3. Italy went on to top the group, drawing 1:1 against Poland.

The final stage of the tournament will now see Ukraine, Ireland and Italy fight for glory, medals and two  coveted promotion spots to the top-8-nations. Belarus, Scotland and Poland will battle for places 4 to 6, while Austria, Turkey and Lithuania will fight against relegation – but only two of the three teams will make it. The decisive games will be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
