26/07/2014: There used to be a rumor in hockey that it takes 10 seconds to score a goal and thereby change your destiny in a game but the Dutch men this week changed that to 7 seconds…. That’s how near they were to playing the Relegation pool! But a great goal from Thierry Brinkmann v Austria with 7 seconds on the clock changed that and now they are EuroHockey Champions!
Netherlands opened the final well, dominating the Germans and really playing as a team, possibly what they lacked in the early part of the week. The Germans however soaked up all the pressure and whilst they put together some excellent attacks but couldn’t find a hole in the Dutch defense.
It took until the 17th minute for the deadlock to be broken by the Dutch via a penalty corner from Johann Luijkx. The score at the half was 1-0 to The Netherlands.
The Dutch took control of the second half scoring just after the break from Warmerdam. Brinkman made it 3-0 after 49 minutes and the game looked beyond the Germans. However they continued to play, in typical German fashion and a PC in the 52nd minute scored by Lukas WINDFEDER and it looked like the Germans might make a comeback.
But that was not the case as the Dutch had found their mojo and the German net! P Luikx added one in the 58th with Hiebendaal made it 5-1 in the 67th minute. A lapse of concentration led to a German goal also in the 67th via Grünewald but the final score was 5-2.
