Farewell Johan – 20 years back and 10 years ahead

Amsterdam – Johan Wakkie has twenty years led the Royal Dutch Hockey Association (KNHB) uniquely. Hockey has under his leadership gone through a tremendous development. Today, at RAI Amsterdam his farewelltook place with an exquisite and varied program on all aspects of his directorship. The theme this afternoon was ’20 years back and 10 years ahead. “It is with image, sound and a host of eminent speakers looking back at notable events and the policies that have created a vision of the future. Wakkie is also today named Honorary Member of KNHB.
Twenty years in which projects have been started and been achieved. Accessibility, innovation and connection are some points on which the KNHB, has distinguished itself in recent decades led by Wakkie. Under Wakkie’s leadership hockey in general and in the hockey association has grown spectacularly. The KNHB currently enjoys nearly 250,000 members, this compared to 128,000 in 1998. He has also been closely involved in the organization of the World Cup 1998 in Utrecht and the World Championships in 2014 in The Hague.
Next to twenty years of looking back, it was also a time to look ahead ten years with authorities from the sport, business and government. From different angles KNHB wants to be an inspiring vision of hockey in 2024 with subsequent ambitious.
Erik Gerritsen, director KNHB: “Johan is liked inside and outside the sport of hockey, with a clear vision he has supported the development of hockey and strengthened it.Hockey in the Netherlands is growing partly thanks Johan, both in size and success. Johan has also made a significant contribution to the social recognition of sport. ”
The EHF President, Board and all its members would like to thank Johan for his enthusiasm, energy and incredible drive to achieve so much, it has been a pleasure to know him and work with him and he leaves behind a thriving organisation (The KNHB) that is one of the cornerstones of European Hockey. Thank you Johan Wakkie.
