Austria v Ukraine
The Second Day of the EuroHockey Indoor Junior Championships opened with Austria v Ukraine. Austria were determined to consolidate their position at the top of the Pool and within 15 minutes were 5-0 up against Ukraine. By the end of the first half the score was 9-0. In the second half Austria made some tactical decisions to conserve their energy for their now assured Semi- Final place this evening and as a result Ukraine had the opportunity to score late in the game. The idea scenario for the Austrian management would be to play in the Final v Poland.

Poland v Turkey
The second game of the Day was Poland v Turkey. RUTKOWSKI scored an early goal, much to the delight of the home crowd. But in spite of darting runs down the right from RUTKOWSKI, the score remained 1-0 for Poland until a late corner which was switched at the top of the D to MAZANY and he had no trouble slotting it home. The half time score was 2-0. The third goal for Poland was scored by KUROWSKI a well worked counter attack which saw him strike from the top right of the D. Turkey played some excellent technical hockey, their captain ACIGOV leading the attacks from the back, but they have yet to find a really lethal finisher to take advantage of their chances. A consolation goal put the final score at 3-1. We spoke to Bert Bunnik, the Turkish Coach about their experiences here in Torun and plans for the rest of the Tournament.

Switzerland v Belarus
A slow start to the game but a direct strike from a PC from MORARD put Switzerland ahead, but a spell of 4 minutes is all you need in indoor hockey to change a game and with a PC and 2 field goals, and a missed stroke, it was Belarus who went into the half time as the leaders. GASSNER had a great chance in the 31st minute but he watched the ball agonizingly slowly crossing the base line just wide. A PC in the 32nd minutes, stopped onthe line, perhaps illegally, but a good advantage played and goal for Swiss! As they pushed forward again GASSNER didn’t miss this time – drawing the game with 4 on the clock. Against the run of play KAROL had an unbelievable strike from the top left, beating the keeper and putting Belarus ahead 3-4 and tantalizingly close to a semi-final slot. The Swiss took their keeper off for the last 2 minutes pushing hard for the equaliser but to no avail. Belarus are in the semi-final!

Russia v Portugal
The final game of the morning session was Russian v Portugal and both teams had the chance to get to the semi-final but Portugal would need an excellent performance and a win, a draw would be enough for Russia. Russia went ahead, with Portugal responding with a PC in the 8th minute and they then went ahead courtesy of SANTOS, who has been a great asset to the team, but the Russians equalized again. KURAEV, (RUS) put his team ahead at the break. 2 excellent corners from Russian captain PROSKURYAKOV were the difference in the second half and ultimately the deciding factor in who would progress to the semi-final
