Hosts CFU Lamas and Highway HC take gold at the EuroHockey Club Challenge IV

24.05.2014, Brussels: Another busy day with our EuroHockey Challenges coming to the business end of the events!

 

As the EuroHockey Club Challenge IV finished in Santa Maria de Lamas with the hosts and the Turks Highway HC sharing joint honours and the right to play in the Challenge III in 2016. The road to the EHL is not paved in gold but the sweat of many players from clubs over many years to earn the right to play with against the ‘big boys’ of European Hockey, so these wins are another step on that road for the players, their fans and their fellow clubs, the heart and soul of European Hockey. With no relegation here, the teams from Malta, Finland, Norway and Greece will play again in the EuroHockey Club Challenge IV.

At the EuroHockey Club Challenge III in Zagreb after the awful weather, finally on day 3 they managed to conclude the game between HC NSA Sofia and KK Moravske Toplice that had been abandoned due to lightning 36 hours before, Both teams turned up to a beautiful Zagreb morning to conclude the final 35 minutes of their match with Sofia leading 2 -0 when the game was suspended.

Sofia started the stronger and after some strong play from Georgiev they extended their lead to 3 goals, their continued pressure paid off and tehy continued to score freely with Georgiev getting his second and Sofia securin a 7 – 0 victory.
The second game of the day swas Ardas Rudamina take on Olcote HC in what was a tightly contested first half which Ardas Rudamina edged 2 -0, Ards made a decisive break just after half time to make it 3 – 0 and ran out comfortable winners thanks to two goals from Jankevicius for the game to finish 4 -1.

Game 3 was a very tight encounter with Naeaos Apollon HC taking on Inta Baltic Champignons, Inta took the lead from the penalty spot with Balsiukas converting the Penalty stroke. Inta remained ahead until half time with both sides missing chances.

The second half burst into action with Aslford scoring for Napeos in the first minute of the second half and the game remained tight for the next 20 minutes with both sides not making the most of their opportunities when Balsiukus struck for his second from a Penalty corner and Inta hung on for a 1-2 victory.

The final match of the day was between that hosts HC Marathon abd HK Moravske Toplice, in front of a large and supportive crowd Marathon ran out comfortable winners finishing the first half 4 -0 and ahead with the final score as 0-9 with Mark Maric finishing as top scores with 3 goals.

These results make for a fascinating final day to decide the top and bottom places.

Meanwhile at the EuroHockey Club Challenge II in Lousada, SDUSHOR Minsk were as successful as their fellow club , Brest in Dublin with a solid 4-0 win over Slagelse. The hosts had an equally good win v Grammarians.

In the final day tomorrow Eagles HC , AD Lousada, SDUSHOR Minsk  and Grammarians HC are all in with a chance of promotion and taking home gold!

Finally today at the EuroHockey Club Challenge I in Wettingen, a full programme of games saw Navax AHTC, HAHK Mladost, Cardidff & Met and HC Rotweiss Wettingen earn the vital points in their pool to make the promotion playoffs tomorrow. Today’s huge score for Swiss team Servette was not enough to get them into the playoff place, so they must be content to stay in this Division for another year. Promotion into the Trophy in 2016 gives teams a real chance of pushing for an EHL place in 2017.
