Ireland, Poland, Ukraine and hosts Italy get off to a flying start in Mori

Posted On 5th July 2015

05.06.2015, Brussels; The EuroHockey Youth Championship II got underway today in Mori, Italy.

In the opening game of Pool A Ireland beat the Czech Republic, Ireland were better technically than Czech and their fitness stood to them. In the same pool Poland imposed a 3 to 2 win over Lithuania.

Italy began their campaign in the best way with a win over Wales. Wales appeared intimidated in the first half but much more competitive after the break. Italy showed a territorial supremacy and, driven by the large number of home fans they attacked via the midfield. In the second Italy doubled their lead in the first few minutes via Captain Vittoria. Wales pilled on the pressure and were rewarded with a goal to close the gap. The rest of the half saw the reds seeking persistently for the equaliser but the Italians manage to escape on several occasions and kept their one goal difference winning the game and taking the 3 points.

In the earlier Group B game Ukraine had a tight 2 to 1 win over Austria.

In conclusion , the first day was very hard-fought from all the teams and we’re sure that even tomorrow will be some great hockey!
