EuroHockey Youth Championships III, Girls Sveti Ivan Zelina

“All girls are heroes for us”

The opening day of EuroHockey Youth Championship III, Girls, was very hot. Opening game, Turkey vs. Switzerland, was played on 35 °C degrees. Turkey won 3-0 (2-0). The Turkish goal in 2nd minute by captain Songul Gultekin shocked Swiss team. Team Switzerland try to score the goal, but Turkish team controlled the game in first half. Two minutes before the half time, Gultekin scored her second to extend a lead to 2-0.

In second half, game pace was very strong, despite very hard conditions. Swiss team have few good chance but turkish defence was very good. Eight minutes before the end, Meryem Oymak converted penalty stroke for 3-0.

In the second game of day 1, home nation beat Gibraltar 1-0 (1-0).  Only goal for Croatia was scored by Martina Bastalec, player from Sveti Ivan Zelina, two minutes before half-time. Game was very nervous, especially in a second half, when spectators see five yellow cards (and one in first half). After the hooter, we saw happy Croatian players and disappointed girls from Gibraltar.

Despite results, winners and losers, one old hockey player from Sveti Ivan Zelina told us who is, for him the winner of the first day:

“All girls are heroes for us. Playing under such conditions is not easy.”
