EHF/FIH Academy Level 1 Course– Nicosia, Cyprus

10th July 2015

Under the watchful eyes of EHF conductors Siegfried Aikman and Norman Hughes, 16 young coaches attended an FIH Academy Level 1 seminar in Nicosia from 6th – 9th July 2015.

The conductors covered many Start Up Hockey topics:

• Basic Skills
• Role of the Coach
• Coaching styles and methods
• Respect and Safety issues
• Small sided games

3 of the delegates were aged between 13 and 17 years old so they were not eligible to complete the full assessment (Level 1 coaches need to be min. 18 years old)

The remaining 13 delegates all took an assessed practical session and gained the full EHF Level 1 award.

At the end of the seminar EHF Development and Education manager Norman Hughes and President of Cyprus Hockey Federation Petros Karafokas challenged the young coaches to get into the local schools and offer them regular coaching. At the end the aim is to stage a schools hockey festival comprising schools from Limassol and Nicosia in December 2015.

With so many young coaches now fully trained Cyprus hopes to boost the junior player numbers over the next few years

EHF wishes to thank Cyprus Olympic Committee for funding and supporting the event with excellent facilities, Cyprus HF for staging the event, Siegfried Aikman for sharing his knowledge and expertise and the young coaches for committing to the training process.
