Motivational Monday – Congratulations to Austrian Hockey!

Posted On 16th November 2015

Motivational Monday seems to come around faster and faster each week and bring such great news from our Nations and Clubs!

Today we are delighted to celebrate the great news from Austria as they win a very prestigious European- wide award for their wonderfully inventive project – HockeyTV, being placed 3rd at the European Change Communications Awards 2015!

HockeyTV, the brainchild of Fabian Ringler, saw the fantastic collaboration between Austrian Hockey and it’s clubs.

This, says Ringler, is not a live-stream as we currently know it, but a new take on the idea. Clubs in the system are equipped with a camera and the necessary hardware and software. This system then automatically filters highlights according to set standards – goals, saves, shots – and then feeds their own club channel with content every week.

Ringler says this is “lean content”, combining the benefits of live-stream with the benefits of a highlight summary – the cost is in the production of one piece of content, where normally there would be two.

“The camera is super simple to operate, offers HD quality streams and allows clubs and federations to self-produce highlight content at a moderate cost and create new channels of marketing and viral reach at the same time,” he says.

Through the Hockey Highlight Live system, hockey fans pre-select favourite leagues, venues or highlight category (e.g goals) and get short clips pushed to a mobile device. All highlights can be shared directly via social media channels or embedded into websites.

“We asked ourselves, how can we deliver only thrilling, relevant stuff to our audience with a minimum of effort?” explained Ringler. “Like millions of people playing sport at an amateur level, we suffer limited resources, interest and media presence. This is a game-changing solution.”

Walter Kapounek, President of Austrian Hockey and a Member of the Board of the EHF said “We are very proud to have received this award for our performance outside of hockey. Our project “HockeyTV” is very important to us and we are more than happy to see our commitment and effort appreciated on this level. This is also a huge motivation for us and our future.”

Austrian-Hockey vice-president for development, strategy and marketing, Fabian Ringler, was also proud of the achievement: “This is a great award and nice acknowledgment for the energy and commitment all of us invested in “HockeyTV”, said Ringler, who started the project. “We are extremely happy, that as a small federation, we are not only moving towards the best teams in the world on a sports level. Also outside the pitch we are – thanks to our partner sportvideos365.com – in a very good way.”

For Ringler, a former international player who has the lead within Austrian Hockey regarding HockeyTV, the project is far from finished: “We wouldn’t be surprised, if our unique digital format, that delivers highlights, goals and the best moments of every game in real-time, would revolutionise the world of sports-content in the near future. Especially on amateur and youth-level.”

The EHF acknowledges this fantastic achievement. EHF Director General, Angus Kirkland said ‘There is no doubt that with the Global thinking on how we use the internet predicting that 70% of on-line activity will have switched to video by 2017, HockeyTV is a brilliant vehicle for hockey fans to engage directly with what they want to see. Austrian Hockey is really at the cutting edge of this thinking. We commend them on this wonderful project and well deserved award.”
