The EuroHockey Indoor Championships Women starts in Minsk tomorrow at 10am with the opening game between the Champions, The Netherlands and Poland, bronze medalists in 2014.
In Pool A, The Netherlands will be the favourites to make it to the semi-finals, followed closely by Poland. Czech Republic were unfortunate to miss out on the semi-finals in 2014 so will be aiming to make amends this time around, and Belgium, the lowest ranked in this Pool will be looking to make an impression, coming up from Championship II in 2014.
In Pool B, on the basis of their outstanding record in this event, winning all but 2 Championships since the event began in 1975, Germany will be wanting revenge on their Dutch neighbours who outperformed them in 2014. Ukraine the only other team to beat Germany in the Final are always a threat and come into this event hoping for a semi-final place, in spite of just be promoted back into the Division. The hosts however, under the guidance of Dutch coach Herman Kruis hope that the 7th man (the home crowd) will help them into the semi-finals. Finally Austria, ranked 4th, will again be threatening a semi-final place, so there are no easy games here in Minsk!
The EHF Director General, Angus Kirkland said “The EHF is delighted to be in Minsk for the first time to host a Championship Division event. The facilities for the players and fans are second to none in the Palace Arena. We are very pleased with the co-operation of Belarus Hockey and Belarus5 who have secured Live-streaming of 11 of the 20 games, with instant highlights of these games via our Twitter feed @eurohockeyorg.”
