#MotivationMonday – Officials for Europe

Posted On 18th April 2016

18th April 2016, Brussels: Want to be motivated this Monday? As part of our #MotivationMonday we are delighted to report that the EHF hosted an Officials for Europe Top TO Seminar last weekend in Brussels and it certainly was motivating to meet such a dedicated bunch of people who devote their time as volunteers to hockey!

A packed agenda was served at the welcome Reception on Friday afternoon as delegates introduced themselves to the group and laid out their expectations for the weekend. Sharing knowledge was certainly the main emphasis as delegates expected to learn not only from the presenters but also from each others experiences at events.

The delegates came from a wide ranging base of experience, but all with a common goal to become more Professional in their approach to their voluntary jobs as Technical Officials.

The fully packed Agenda included:

The Role of the TO/TD/Medical Officer
Resources / Working with the Media /The role of Social Media
Interactive Session on TMS
The role of the UM – the relation with TO / TD and the marking system
Personal Skills – interactive session
The role of the Team Manager
The role of the Floormanager/TV
The EHF Appointments System
Code of Conduct, Protests and Hearings

Edna Rutten, Chair of the Education Committee, Officials said of the Seminar “These Seminars for officials are important because we want to raise the standard at Events. We want to get more professionalism in and we want to exchange knowledge and to share experiences in order to raise the level.”

Peter de Leeuw, a very experienced TO said of his expectations coming into the Seminar and had it been useful “Yes very useful, a refresher. From what I have witnessed in the changes in hockey, the organisation of hockey it is very important that all Judges, TOs and Tournament Delegates keep on top of the rapid changes in a sport that is becoming more professional every year.” When asked would it change the way he works he said “Not necessarily but it gives you another view of what you did before and you can take the other delegates experiences with you, which is good.”

The EHF was delighted to have reached out to New Zealand Hockey and in the spirit of Sharing Knowledge, Jackie Tomlinson travelled all the way from Auckland, we spoke to to her about what her expectations were from the Seminar, she said “To learn best practice from experienced officials and if what we are doing back home (New Zealand) is good, bad or indifferent and the same as what you guys are doing here in Europe.” When asked did she feel it was worth the long trip Jackie added “Yes definitely, it’s been really good, I’ve learnt some things but found that a lot of what we are doing at home is the same, which is a good thing! It’s also been great to establish a network of people in Europe, that hopefully I’ll work with in the future. It’s so great when you already know the faces of those you work with on a Technical team before you arrive at an event.”
