25th July 2014: Day 2 of the U18 EuroHockey Championships as the girls in Pool A were in action. Spain took on Poland and Belgium faced Netherlands, and the boys in Pool B were also in action here in UCC, Cork

Spain 5 (F.Amundson, C.Ycart, P.Alvareez 2, L.Abajo Saenz De Tejada) Poland 0

Spain dominated the game from the off. Captain Florancia Amundson started Spain off in the right direction with a goal in the 8th minute. In spite of several chances in the first half they failed to convert until just before the half when Clara Ycart doubled their score. In the second half Spain attacked at every opportunity, knowing that a decent score against Poland could be the difference of a semi-final place or not! Patricia Alvarez got on the scoresheet twice in the 49th and 59th minutes and Lucia Abajo Saenz De Tejada added a 5th in the 61st minute.

Belgium 2 (D.Sisteermans, S.Ikegwounu) Netherlands (C.Bosch, Y.Jansen 2, P.Dicke, F.Moes)

A stunning start from Damy Sistremans’ saw Belgium going ahead in the 3rd minute. The Dutch pushed forward but failed to convert until the 13th minute, when Carmel Bosch scored to level the game 1-1. Belgium went ahead again via a well worked corner from Shauna Ikegwounu in the 17th minute. From thne on the Belgian’s defended brilliantly and it took 8 corners for striker Tibbi Jansen to break the defence and draw the game in the 50th minute, which seemed to spur the Dutch girls on and minutes later she stepped up to slot home a stroke in the 53rd minute putting Netherlands ahead for the first time in the game. The Dutch then dominated the last 15 minutes of the game and pushed ahead to take the game 5-2 and ensure their place in the semi-final.

England 6 (E.Way 2, T.Crowson, M.Ramshaw, J.Oates, E.Kimber) Italy 0

In spite of Italy’s efforts to press England, it was very much against the run of play that England scored in the 27th minute. Goals came thick and fast in the second half as Italy seemed to struggle to contain the English attack. A 6-0 win possibly flattered England, but had put them in a good position in the pool for a semi-final place.

Netherlands 7 (D.de Haan 2, M.Kuipers, S.van Huiden, L.Schols, S.Martens) Spain 2 (M.Recasens, X.Gispert)

In a fantastic display from both teams, with moments of individual brilliance especially from Xavier Gispert of Spain. But in terms of team effort and a display of teamwork, the Dutch team was outstanding today and their 7-2 finish puts them level on points with England after 2 days of play.
