3rd November 2016: An ambassador for hockey both on and off the field of play, we focus today on Michael Green, our next European candidate up for election to the FIH Board.
Michael, an outstanding International player for Germany with 320 International Caps, he’s been World and European Champion (Indoor and Outdoor) and World Player of the Year in 2002. Along the way he graduated as an Orthopedic Surgeon and now runs his own independent practice in Germany. Since his retirement he has been arguably offering as much of his time for hockey off the field as when he was in the middle of playing career!
His role as Chair of the Athletes Committee meant that he has been the voice of the Athletes on the FIH Board since 2010. In 2014 he was instrumental in bringing in elections of Athletes to the Athletes Committee for the first time. As a member of the FIH Competitions Committee and was asked to be a part of Events Portfolio Panel and the Hockey5s Committee. His medical background has led him to offering his time both on the FIH Medical Panel and as Medical Officer for the Hockey tournaments in London and Rio.
We were lucky enough to catch a minute with him and when asked as to what sets him apart and why should the Members vote for him, Michael said ” Hockey has given so much to me both as an athlete and now in my family life, with my three children now reflecting my passion for the sport in their participation. The sport has given me so much over the years and whilst my work for the Athletes Committee has given me the opportunity to give something back, I feel I can offer so much more as an Executive Board Member.”
