The EuroHockey Club Trophy in Elektrostal, Russia got off to a great start on Day One as Grove Menzieshill from Scotland set the bar high with a 6-2 win over Navax AHTC from Austria. The other three matches were much cagier affairs, with only one goal separating teams. Expect the Scots to come out determined to extend their lead at the top of Pool B in Saturday’s match against SV Arminen, while the host club, Elektrostal, will be desperate to hit winning ways in front of its supporters as it takes on Slavia Prague.
Grove Menzieshill vs Navax AHTC Wien 6-2
In the opening match of the event, Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club, got its EuroHockey Club Trophy campaign off to a blistering start with a 6-2 win over Navax AHTC Wien.
The Austrian club got onto the score-sheet first, taking a 2-0 lead in the quarter through Linus Pilch and Lennard Gehrmann. Menzieshill struck back through Benjamin Cosgrove and his shot was followed seconds later by a reverse stick shot from Paul Martin.
The scores stayed level in this first Pool B match until the final quarter when Gavin Tomlinson put the Scottish side ahead. His goal was followed by successful strikes from Adam Fallis and Albert Rowling before Paul Martin got his second and Menzieshill’s sixth.
SV Arminen vs ASD SH Paolo Bonomi 1-0
Austrian club SV Arminen took the lead in the final seconds of the first quarter of the second Pool B match when Patrick Schmidt scored from a penalty corner. Although the game flowed back and forth, the Italian side were unable to find the equaliser and the scoreline stayed at 1-0 in Arminen’s favour.

SK Slavia Prague vs HC Minsk 2-2
This Pool A encounter was a tense affair, with neither side conceding anything on the pitch. The first quarter was a fast-paced affair. Dmytro Luppa put Minsk ahead in the third minute with a well-taken penalty corner but that lead was cancelled out in the ninth minute when Martin Hofmann, who had only just entered the field of play, got onto the end of a ball and slammed it past Iaroslav Hordey in the Minsk goal.
The Belarus team restored their lead one minute later through Ivan Liakh, and it took Slavia Prague a further 16 minutes before they scored and levelled the game. This time it was Zuna Cenek who scored from open play.
The remainder of the game was one of attack and counter-attack but neither side were able to strike a decisive blow and take all three points.
Dinamo Elektrostal vs HC Rotweiss Wettingen 1-2
A goalless first half was nonetheless an intriguing affair between the host club and their Swiss opponents. It was Rotweiss Wettingen who took the lead, a penalty stroke scored by Marco Michel after a foul in the circle. That lead was extended 10 minutes later through Fabian Wassmer, a well-taken goal scored from open play.
Elektrostal put up a spirited fightback and halved the deficit through Mikhail Proskuriakov, as he scored from a penalty corner with three minutes left on the clock. The home side kept piling on the pressure but Rotweiss Wettingen, led by goalkeeper Michael Kaufeler kept the ball out of the goal and clung onto three points.
