Day 4 – EuroHockey Championships III, Women and Men

2nd July 2017: As Day 4 ended, so did the men’s pool games at the EuroHockey Championships in Sveti Ivan Zelina, Croatia. Italy, Turkey, Belarus and Croatia are the confirmed sem-finalists. 

Slovakia 1-4 Turkey (M)
An important match for both teams as it decided the last place in the semi-finals. Both teams played well and created a lot of chances, but the first goal was scored by Turkey in the second quarter. Slovakia played well both in offence and defence and managed to score a goal, but Turkey responded quickly and closed out any chance Slovakia had.

Belarus 9-0 Malta (M)

Belarus started the match strong scoring 3 quick goals but Malta recovered and fought back. They didn’t managed to score a goal.  In the second half Belarus managed to break Malta and in the fourth quarter the scored four goals in less then five minutes and completed the win. With this win they secured first place in pool B.

Lithuania 0-3 Croatia (M)

A must win match for both teams as a win would secure a playoff spot. The game was level with both teams pressing hard. Croatia managed to break the deadlock just before the half time whistle. They followed it up in the second half with two additional goals and won the match. With this win Croatia secured second place in pool B and with that a playoff spot.

Tomorrow is a rest day and we resume with the semi-finals and Pool C on Friday:

Lithuania 19-1 Slovenia (W)
In the women’s event, as strong Lithuanian team faced off against Slovenia. At the beginning of the match Lithuania scored first but Slovenia were quick to equalise. Lithuania scored a couple of quick goals and Slovenia couldn’t find a solution for the Lithuania offence. But Slovenia put up a good fight and managed to create a couple of chances that unfortunately they didn’t convert into goals.

The women also have a rest day tomorrow ahead of the final games to determine who will be promoted to the Championship II Division in 2019.
