4th August 2017: Today was the final day of the women’s EuroHockey Championships III in Sveti Ivan Zelina and Turkey were crowned winners!
The day started however with the men’s event and the Pool C, relegation pool:
Slovakia 3:1 Lithuania (M)
The match for fifth place was against Slovakia and Lithuania. Lithuania started the match well scoring a goal and holding on to the lead throughout the first half. At the end of third quarter Slovakia managed to make it level. Both teams picked up the pace but it was Slovakia who managed to pull ahead and win.
And then onto the semi-final games:
Belarus 6-1 Turkey (M)
In the first semi-final of the day Belarus, the 1st seed of Pool B, played against Turkey, the 2nd seed of Pool A. Belarus started the match well by scoring an early goal. They managed to extend their lead just before the end of the first half. Belarus didn’t stop there, they started the second half even better by scoring two goals in less than five minutes. Turkey managed to get one back at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but the three red cards they got certainly didn’t help. Belarus scored two late goals to secure their win.
Italy 2-0 Croatia (M)
In the second semi-final Italy took on the host nation Croatia. Italy started the match strong creating an early chance that led to a Penalty corner that they successfully converted. The match was level from there on with both teams struggling in the last third. In the third quarter Italy managed to score another goal trough another penalty corner and went on to win the match.
So the line-up for tomorrow, 5th August, is confirmed as:
In the women’s single pool event, all the games mattered today for who would be going up to Championship II in 2019:
Switzerland 1-2 Turkey (W)
It was the match for first place and it was even match through the entire duration. Switzerland managed a lead in the ninth minute but Turkey was quick to equalise and just a few minutes later took the lead. For the rest of the duration the match the teams were equal. It was a fair match full of action on both sides but Turkey won the and with that the first place.
Lithuania 6 -1 Croatia (W)
The match for third place had an action packed start. Lithuania scored a couple of early goals trough open play, counter attacks and penalty corners. Croatia managed to get one back before the first quarter ended. Through the match the teams were pretty equal except Lithuania managed to use the chances created to score goals. With two goals late in the third quarter Lithuania secured their win and the third place.
