Day 1 at the EuroHockey Indoor Championships, III, Nicosia

Posted On 12th January 2018

12th January 2018: The first day of the EuroHockey Indoor Championships III in Nicosia 2018 began with a 6-2 win for Belarus over Wales. Belarus came out strongly and established a commanding 5-0 lead by half-time before Wales pulled back two late goals.

The second game featured the host nation Cyprus – making their indoor debut – against Scotland. The Scottish team soon stamped their authority on the match and played some fluid hockey to finish emphatic winners by 13-1, with Patrick Christie grabbing four goals.

Next up were Greece against Slovakia. In a mostly even match, Slovakia proved more adept in front of goal and secured the win by 4-1.

In the fourth game of the day, Wales started well and scored early on against Slovenia. However, two quick goals saw Slovenia leading 2-1 at half time. The second half was dominated by Wales, though they had to wait until the 37th minute to level the match 2-2.

The evening session opened with Cyprus vs Belarus. Belarus dominated from start to finish and scored at will – Ivan Lutsevich and Yauheni Mikheichyk getting five apiece – though the final 15-0 score did not do justice to the effort shown by the out-classed Cyprus team.

In the next match, Scotland produced another excellent performance, this time against Greece. Joshua Cairns scored five and Patrick Christie four, as the Scots romped to a 14-0 win.

Slovenia and Slovakia played the last game of the day. The Slovaks proved too strong for Slovenia and came out deserved winners by 6-0.
