The event:
The CWG is huge event for the players who participate in these Games as for the Welsh, Scottish and English teams it is only multi-sport event where each country play as Wales, Scotland and England. GB is the representative team at the Olympics and is made up of representation from these 3 countries. A staggering 360 hockey players will compete in this year’s Commonwealth Games!
The Men’s event:
England men finished 3rd in 2014, with Wales and Scotland out of the medal games. The biggest challenge in the Men’s event will most likely come from Australia, gold medalists in 2014.
The Women’s event:
In the women’s event England are looking to do one better than 2014 and add a gold CWG medal to previous silver and bronze.
English Captain, Alex Danson, speaking to The Telegraph on her ambitions for this event said “Like all elite sports people, England’s hockey women believe in the “one game at a time” mantra but that does not stop Danson from laying out what shade of medal she hopes to take home. “We would love to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games, I’ve won two bronzes and a silver,” she says. “But it is about preparing. Medals are won before you go to a tournament. That is why we work so hard to be progressive with our training at home.”
The EHF is looking forward to following the efforts of all 6 European teams over the course of the event which runs from 5th – 14th April.
