WAC in seventh heaven at men’s Trophy on historic day

Hosts WAC enjoyed the perfect start to their first EuroHockey Club Trophy enjoyed an historic moment as they oldest club on continental Europe finally tasted their first competitive European match.

And they won it in style as Christian Bauer’s team beat Italian side HC Bra with 7-0 in their first game in front of 300 fans.

Daniel Kaut opened the scoring after 13 minutes from a penalty corner, with Bernhard Hajos (25.), Mathias Podpera (26.) and Dominik Kaut (30.) making it 4:0 before half-time. Ahmed Mansour scored twice in the 34th and 37th minute, Armin Herzog hit home for the 7:0 in the last minute of the game.

The other game in Pool B ended with a 2-0 victory for HC Vinnitsa (UKR) against Rotweiss Wettingen from Switzerland with goals in the first half from Danylo Yakybiuk and Yurii Dzemukh.

In Pool A, the first game between KS AZS AWF Poznan from Poland and HC Minsk from Belarus offered plenty of excitement. After a slow start, Poznan took the lead after nine minutes through a penalty corner by Patryk Pawlak before an equaliser came via Dymtro Luppa from a corner made things interesting with less than ten minutes to go.

Aliaksandr Korsik made it 2-1 for Minsk in the 52nd minute but, only three minutes later, Poznan, who got two yellow cards in the last quarter, were back in the game thanks to a second goal by Pawlak. With only a minute on the clock, the Belarussians took the win after Aliaksandr Hancharou made it 3-2 after a penalty corner.

Stroitel Brest (BLR) beat Grange HC from Scotland by 2-1. Calum McKenzie put the Scots in front in the second half only for Yauheni Stsepanets levelled and Mikhail Paulovich won the game with three minutes to go.
