The Netherlands claim their place in in the semi-final

Posted On 17th July 2018

17th July 2018: It was Pool B that was on display today, as current Champions just edged past the up and coming Belgians to claim a place in the semi-finals. Hosts Spain overcame France in a good display of passing hockey.

Belgium v The Netherlands 0-2

The Belgians started the game well with two big chances from a penalty corner. But the Dutch had more possession and controlled the game during the first half. VAN DER VEERDONCK opened the score for the Dutch team just before halftime from a penalty corner.

The Dutch started the second half pressing the Belgian defence really high, looking for a second goal. Five minutes after halftime, OMRANI received a brilliant diagonal pass from the midfield which she exploited perfectly and won her 1 v 1 duel with the Belgian goalkeeper. The score remains unchanged until the end of the game.

Spain v France 6-1

The Spanish girls put on an impressive display of passing hockey as the BARRIOS twin sisters showed some world class skills, Sara being responsible for 4 of the 6 Spanish goals, a hat-trick of field goals and a slap hit to convert a pc.

BARRIOS opened the scoring for Spain in the 9th minute with MONSALVE doubling the score in the 20th minute. BARRIOS (Sara) was on the scoresheet again in the 29th, 37th and 53rd minute.

France did reply in the 50th minute, VAN BOLHUIS  delivered a powerful slap hit that beat the Spanish keeper. But Spain added a 6th, a turnover that BOSCH roofed into the back of the French net!

Tomorrow we have the final pool games and all to play for as whilst the Dutch are safely into the semi-final, whilst Spain needs to draw v Belgium as they have the higher number of goals scored.
