Austria open YOG with a win over Canada

Austrian boys had a dream start at the YOG  Summer Olympics in Buenos Aires with a 3-2 win over Canada.

At 27 degrees Celsius and in a crowded centre court, the two teams engaged in an intense, thrilling encounter in front of YOG Ambassador Luciana Aymar, one of the best hockey players of all time.

Austria went ahead through goals by Wellan and Matousek 2-0 but the Canadians made up after the break. Austria got the winning goal in the second half.

“The Canadians have a strong team, but we were never distracted and deserved to win,” captain Maximilian Trnka was satisfied with the performance – and was thrilled with the mood at the Youth Olympic Center.

“We have never played in front of so many spectators – we want more of that.” The next chance is on Monday as we face India.”*

Austrian girls:

The hockey girls lost 2-4 to India, with goals scored by Sabrina Hruby and Laura Kern. On Monday there will be a duel with the gold favourites hosted by Argentina.

Polish boys:

The Polish boys played out a 9 field goal thriller beating Mexico in the opening game of the Tournament.

Polish girls:

Finished with a 1-1 draw v Mexico in their opening game.
