EuroHockey Club Cup – AB&HC Amsterdam, 19th – 22nd April 2019
Real Sociedad, Der Club an der Alster, HC ‘s Hertogenbosch and the hosts Amsterdam all won their knock out games on day 1 of the EuroHockey Club Cup here in Amsterdam.
Real Sociedad – Ritm Grodno (4-2)
It was the first game of the last edition of the EHCC. Real Sociedad was the better side from the start and created big chances in the first quarter. An individual effort from Campoy led to a penalty stroke. It was converted by Altuna to take the lead for Real Sociedad. After a terrific solo effort from 50 meters by team captain Marana, Real Sociedad increased their advantage in the first quarter. A minute later Grodno earned their first penalty corner of the game but couldn’t convert it. Good goalkeeping from Mikanovich denied the Spanish team to increase their lead early into the second quarter. In the 29th minute, Campoy finished just in front of the keeper to put her side three goals up. Real Sociedad was awarded the last penalty corner before half time but the score remained 3-0. Grodno came back in the game with a rebound from Vasilyeva to make it 3-1 after the break. In the same minute, Grodno’s captain converted a penalty stroke to reduce the score. A few minutes before the end of the game, Grodno was awarded a penalty corner but on the counter, it was Real Sociedad that scored the last goal by Campoy to secure a 4-2 win.

The second game of the day started strong with a big chance just wide for Alster in the first minute. After that, Alster had most of the ball possession and Surbiton was playing on counters. The score was still 0-0 after the first break. In the second quarter, Alster put high pressure on the Surbiton’s defence but they couldn’t convert their chances. Froschle converted a penalty corner for Alster 5 minutes before half time. Schroeder doubled the lead for her side at the start of the second half. There were not a lot of chances in the third quarter for neither team, with the game being played mainly in the midfield. Alster increased their lead with three goals up with Wiedermann beating the goalie in the 49th minute. Gablac had a big chance in the 56th minute but she just missed the target. A minute later she smashed the ball hard in the back of the goal to make it 4-0 and get a comfortable lead with 3 minutes left in the game. Surbiton couldn’t get one back and Alster qualified for the semi-finals after a well-deserved win.

Newcomers Loreto HC faced the giants of European Hockey and 6 times winner of the EHCC HC ‘s Hertogenbosch. Matla opened the scoring for Den Bosch in the 4th minute, a with the opener for Den Bosch, a PC flick into the side netting. a crashed ball into the D and deflected home by van der Plas in the 23rd minute saw Den Bosch double their lead. Matla got her second, a one on one with the excellent Loreto keeper, Murphy saw Den Bosch dominate the game and head into the dressing room with a 3-0 lead.
Matla wasn’t done! She added her 3rd right at the start of the second half. From then on Den Bosch dropped to a half-court press, content to save energy for the upcoming games. Loreto’s defence worked overtime to keep the score to 4-0. They had a PC in the final minutes and egged on by their vocal support struck, but it was directed at the keeper who easily saved.

We finished the day with the cracker between UHC Hamburg and the host team AH&BC Amsterdam. It was a close game in the first quarter with no big chances for both teams. Hamburg had a good chance at the start of the second quarter as the shot of Stapenhorst just went on the wrong side of the post. Hamburg scored a rebound on what was their first penalty corner of the game to take the lead over the host. A well built up action from Hamburg led to a penalty stroke as Teschke was blocked in her shot on goal. She didn’t hesitate and converted herself from the penalty spot. Amsterdam had a few corners before half time but couldn’t convert them into a goal. Hamburg went into the break with a 2-0 advantage.
Amsterdam was pushing hard in the third quarter to get back in the game. On a well-executed corner, Vega tipped the ball into the net. Stapenhorst showed some great skills down the baseline but her last pass couldn’t find a teammate to tap the ball into the net. On the other side of the pitch, Amsterdam was awarded a penalty corner on the counter which was brilliantly saved by the German goalie. A minute later, Benninga finished just in front of the goalkeeper after a scrambling defence from Hamburg. The same Benninga scored her second goal in the same minute after a big mistake in the German defence. Amsterdam was ahead for the first time of the game. With 3 minutes left on the clock, Hamburg took their goalie out for an extra field player. Hamburg was awarded a penalty corner with one minute left which was deflected outside the goal posts by the Dutch defence. The last minute was intense but Amsterdam managed to keep their lead and qualify for the semi-final against Den Bosch on Sunday.
