Surbiton and UHC Hamburg bounced back from yesterday’s defeat and will now face each other in the 5th / 6th playoff on Monday.
An important day to earn ranking points for the inaugural EHL women, saw Surbiton inch closer to being the first team to qualify with a decisive 7-0 win over Grodno.
Ritm Grodno v Surbiton HC (0-7)
Both Surbiton and Grodno had the challenge to lift themselves from their defeats yesterday and refocus for their ranking game today.
Surbiton was quick off the mark attacking the Grodno goal from the opening whistle. A pc awarded and the umpire played the advantage well to allow the defender’s foot from the pc, Catlin pounced on the loose ball to pop it into the back of the net, to put them 0-1 ahead in the first minute.
A second corner in the 2nd minute was not so fortunate as the strike was mishit, making an easy save for the Belarus keeper. In the 3rd minute, Belarus earned a stroke and the chance to level the game, but Shyntar didn’t get enough power into her strike and made it an easy save for Heesh. A beautiful reverse strike from Woolven in the 6th and a converted pc from Twigg in the 9th saw Surbiton on cruise control for the remainder of the first action-packed quarter. Petter got Surbiton’s 4th, on her knees in front of goal she popped the ball over the keeper, they led 0-4 after 18.
A measured performance in the second half saw a Sanders convert in the 34th, a deflected finish coming from a turnover ball in midfield. Collins added a 6th in 52nd minute, with the comfort of a 0-6 lead coach Garrard gave 2nd keeper (15-year-old Shahbo) a taste of European club hockey. Sanders added a 7th in the final minute and Surbiton are assured of at least a 6th place finish, at worst one better than 2018 with a chance to do even better depending on their game v UHC Hamburg tomorrow.

Hamburg was controlling the game in the first quarter with some good ball possession in their opponent’s half. In the 5th minute Stapenhorst, from a wonderful finish, scored the first goal of the evening to take the lead for her team. After the German goal, it was Loreto with the best chances but Hamburg was defending well in their own circle. A minute before half time, Mavers E. tapped in the rebound after a good first save from the Irish goalkeeper. Hamburg went into the break with a 2-0 advantage. A few minutes into the second half, Mavers M. increased the lead for the team from Hamburg after good work down the wing to make it 3-0. At the end of the third quarter, Loreto was pushing hard to get one back but the German defence didn’t give anything away. In the 54th minute, E. Mavers got her second of the game to get a comfortable 4-0 win over Loreto.
