Men’s Pool B: Netherlands 6 (T Brinkman 2, M van der Weerden, B Bakker, J Janssen, M Pruijser) Scotland 0
The Netherlands topped Pool B with a 4-0 win over Scotland to advance to the semi-finals with a perfect record while the Scots will contest Pool C, hoping they can avoid relegation.
Early goals from Thierry Brinkman and Mink van der Weerden set them on their way and while Scotland defended hard, they could not prevent another four goals from breaking through their rearguard action.
It took six minutes for the Dutch to go in front with Billy Bakker racing forward and cracking home a lovely shot on the run for 1-0. Brinkman got the second before the end of the first quarter from a corner rebound, batting in after Tommy Alexander had blocked a van der Weerden shot.
Van der Weerden did not have to wait too long for his goal; it came from a direct shot in the 23rd minute for 3-0. Scotland, though, did a good job in frustrating the Dutch from totally running away with the scoreline, defending feverishly and in numbers.
And they did have some attacking moments with Kenny Bain shooting into the side-netting and Alan Forsyth almost getting on the end of a cross with a slide.
Brinkman extended the lead midway through the third quarter with a fortuitous shot from the left of the circle that took a deflection and went in at the back post.
Bjorn Kellerman had a goal ruled out meaning they had to wait until two minutes to go for the fifth goal, this one coming from Jip Janssen from a corner. Mirco Pruijser completed the scoring in the last play with a volleyed rebound.
“It wasn’t our best game but three points is a nice feeling going into the semi-finals,” Brinkman said of the win but did say his side could have done more with their numerous attacks.
“The amount of circle penetrations were enough but turning them into shots on goal today was not enough. We have to look at that and improve that for a semi-final [probably] against Spain.”
