Our #FridayFocus today comes from our Umpire Manager refresher course which took place during the Belfius EuroHockey Championships. Umpire Managers from across Europe were welcomed to Antwerp by EHF President Marijke Fleuren for the weekend of 16-18 August.
They gathered for a refresher course, giving them an opportunity to develop and extend their expertise. The course was led by Margaret Hunnaball and Peps van Besien, with specialist sessions from Louise Knipe, Rob ten Cate and Roel van Eert.
Alongside practical considerations such as pre-tournament communication and the briefing, topics ranged from the use of technology and appointments strategy, to match observations and giving feedback. We also had a presentation from sports performance professional, Kate Baker, who talked to us about talent and how to identify it.
A crucial part of the weekend was the opportunity for UMs to share experiences and discuss the answers to any questions they had. We watched clips, discussed positioning and reflected on how to support and get the most out of umpires of all levels.
The UMs from the EuroNations mens’ tournament, Yolanda Brada, Juanma Requena and Carol Metchette joined us to discuss their experiences at the event.
It was a pleasure to welcome the UDP umpires to join us for a look at the role of the umpire manager and then to watch the men’s Scotland v Germany match, a great opportunity for the umpires of tomorrow to meet their future UMs.
