Day 1 – Roundup – EuroHockey Indoor Championship II, Lucerne

Posted On 18th January 2020

Nothing is decided as yet!

On the first day in Lucerne, Switzerland, all teams left points behind. In a highly exciting championship, in which all teams are close together in terms of quality, six of eight matches were close. So anything is still possible for day 2. Only Denmark in Group B, after two defeats (3:7 against Turkey, 3:6 against Portugal), no longer has a chance of participating in the advancement group.

In Group A the roles are a bit more clearly distributed. The hosts from Switzerland have taken the lead with a win against Italy (7:2) and a draw against Croatia in the evening game (2:2). They will be closely followed by Slovakia, who won their first close match against

Croatia in a last-minute victory (3-2), before a 2-2 draw with Italy. Croatia remains in the game with the draw against Switzerland, as does Italy, which has improved in its second match (against Slovakia). Tomorrow Saturday, anything is still possible, although Italy with the worst goal ratio certainly has only theoretical chances for 1st or 2nd place in the group.

In Group B the signs are clearer: Denmark is still without points at the end of the table, Portugal, Turkey and Belarus are fighting for the first two places. Turkey has put Denmark clearly in its place in the opening game (7:3) and has been successful with several successful Short Corners. Portugal and Belarus were close together (4:5), with the better end for Belarus. Afterwards, the two winners, Turkey and Belarus, were tied (5:5). Turkey and Portugal will have a real deciding match on day 2. Belarus has to score against Denmark if it wants to be a sure thing.
