#MondayMotivation – not all heroes wear capes

Posted On 29th June 2020

It might be a cliché that not all heroes wear capes, but reading about Polish International Bartosz Żywiczka’s bravery, we think we can certainly hail him a hero!

On Friday (June 19) in a house in Toruń, Poland a fire broke out. The fire appeared in the apartment on the 2nd floor.  Fortunately, the door was not locked, so … Bartosz Żywiczka immediately took action.  A well-known field hockey player from the KS Pomorzanin Toruń hockey club, who is also a Polish National Team player, did not hesitate a moment and ran into the flames to save his neighbour’s life.

“I managed to get inside, but couldn’t see much.  I went back to the staircase and began to ask the neighbours to call emergency services” says the man in conversation with the newspaper OtoToruń, “A  moment later I returned to the burning apartment with buckets of water.  The smoke was already huge and I had to move on all fours.  Then I noticed the unconscious man”.

Bartosz Żywiczka got the man outside the flat all on his own and was called a hero by the other residents!  If it wasn’t for him, a tragedy would have happened.  Later, firefighters extinguished the fire.

On the second day, the services unofficially admitted that if it had not been for the heroic behaviour one of the residents, it would rather not be possible to save the life of a man who was in a burning apartment.

It is worth mentioning that on Friday evening Bartosz was preparing for a Cup meeting, v “Pomorek” to be played in Poznan.  “I thought I was used to adrenaline, but it is a completely different feeling,” Żywiczka said, “I’m glad everything ended well.”

The EHF extends its congratulations to Bartosz Żywiczka and for ensuring that his neighbour didn’t perish in the fire!
