#EquallyAmazing – what does that mean to Janne and Thomas?

Posted On 1st July 2019

#EquallyAmazing aims to promote gender balance throughout European Hockey.

Different stories from members of the hockey family will be highlighted; illustrating the important role that both men and women have in strengthening the sport.

We heard from some elite players, at the top of their game, on some of the men and women who have helped them during their journeys.

First up, its German International player, Janne Muller-Wieland who was introduced to the sport of hockey through her older brother, whose presence always challenged her to strive for more.

On her time training with the men’s team, Janne said: “[It] really helped my game. To react quicker and the competitiveness at that levelBut I feel it also helped theirs a bit, so not just doing the fastest or coolest thing but also doing the smartest thing and thinking about the game a bit more.”

Hockey was also a family affair for Belgian International player and current World Champion Thomas Briels. His grandmother picked up the sport and since then, they’ve been a hockey family.

For Thomas, #EquallyAmazing is about securing the same possibilities for women and men. Thomas notes that European Hockey is on the right track with the EHL Women’s Competition set to begin next year, but there are still areas that can be improved.

Being raised by a single mother gives some additional meaning to #EquallyAmazing for him. Her support and sacrifices have greatly impacted his career and he stands behind any project that would encourage women to reach their full potential

The #EquallyAmazing campaign is supported by both the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the European Hockey Federation (EHF) in an effort to ensure that everyone has access to the same opportunities – from the pitch to the boardroom.
